Hairdressers Competition Information

Much of my work is created for the purpose of entering Hairdressing competitions. So I thought it would be useful if I created a resource with information to help my clients with finding said competitions and the entry details.

2021 is set to be another difficult year for the industry however with light hopefully at the end of the tunnel, this year could be a great year for creative hairdressers to flex their muscles. So without too much more waffle, below is some information on the competitions out there. I will try to include links, entry deadlines and some brief information. This is subject to change so make sure you check their websites rather than taking my page as gospel.

L’Oreal Colour Trophy

About: The L’Oréal Colour Trophy, is back to showcase some of the brightest hairdressing talents across the country, whilst ensuring that hairdressers nationwide are continually inspired to celebrate hair inspired by fashion. The L’Oréal Colour Trophy has evolved from its origin 65 years ago, growing from only 300 attendees in 1954 in a singular event to now 8 regional heats and a grand final with the attendance of thousands across the country throughout the competition. L’Oréal Colour Trophy continues to inspire around the world, giving salons the chance to share their passion and talent!

FHA Freelance Awards

About: This competition is open to every self-employed hairdresser in the UK. The rules are simple, if you do a nice piece of work take a picture and send it in. Make sure it is of good quality and shows your work clearly! Go for it, someone has to win. It could be you! Make sure you check out the rules as there are some changes this year. The categories are: Colourist of the Year, Ladies Stylist of the Year, Bridal Stylist of the Year, Prom & Party Stylist of the Year and Creative Stylist of the Year, something for everyone. Among the judging panel are representatives from Wella, Indola, L’Oreal, Debbie G, Carolyn Newman and Anne Veck who are all well respected in our industry.

Hair Colourist of the Year All entries must include three clear images that show your colour work to the best advantage. The entry should be supported with colour formula, technique and inspiration for the look.
Ladies Stylist of the Year All entries must include three clear images of your work to show cutting and styling skills to the best advantage. Bridal Service of the Year All entries must include three images of bridal work showing the range and versatility of your creativity. This could be three views of one style or three individual styles.
Party and Prom Stylist of the Year All entries must include three images of looks you have created showing the range and versatility of your work. This could be three views of one style or three individual styles.
Creative Hairstylist of the Year A chance to let your creativity flow! A category completely open to interpretation. Can be a total make-over or simply a style reinvented on male or female model. Send a ‘before’ image and tell us what inspired you and what techniques you used to achieve the look.

American Crew All-Stairs Challenge

About: Spend time with top grooming experts, perfect the American Crew Menswork method of styling, and show off your craft with the best stylists in the world. This year’s challenge will consist of individual in-country judging panels to select their national winner, who will then move forward to participate in the Global competition. From over 40 finalists, the Global Committee will name (5) top competitors as the All-Star Challenge 2020 Winners.

Wella Professionals TrendVision & Xposure Award

About: Wella’s hair competition now incorporates their student exposure award to the existing six categories (listed below). All you have to do to enter is choose your category, select an image of a finished look you’ve created in the last 12 months. Post it on Instagram using the category #hashtag and tagging @WellaHairUKI

British Hairdressing Awards

About: Each year, the British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional celebrates the very best creative talent in the industry. To be recognised for one of these prestigious awards hairdressers, colourists and teams put together a collection of hair photographs, before their work is blind judged to select the finalists in each category. Finalists are then required to submit a further images for the second round of judging.
