Towards the end of last year I was contacted by Thomas Austin Hair in Southampton to take some shots for use in competitions and promotional use in salon. I was delighted to be contacted as I really enjoy this kind of work. After my previous work with another salon, I was really up for the challenge. They had six different stylist creating looks for me to shoot, some wanted to shoot on location and others wanted a studio look. The shoot took place on a sunday morning as this was the only day they were closed and all stylist could be available. Sundays are generally good days to shoot as models are often available, and you can get locations without too many people around.
I arrived and almost straight away the first model was made up and ready to go. We were shooting on outside at a local recreational ground, and the first look was a young relaxed look. Pefect for the location so we used the childrens play area and skate park to get some casual shots.
The next look was more stylised, a plat with lots of styling in the clothing. The original plan was to shoot with some greenery, however whilst walking to the location i saw some decaying metal sheeting that was on a fence. I though it would look great as it was a complete contridiction to the clothing and look she had. I often try to do this with my shoots, putting a look in a location that is the complete opposite often makes the subject really stand out. This worked really well in this instance, and for a first time model she did a stirling job.
The next look was very different as it was quite punky and modern with undercut on one side of the head. The model had great attitude and it really worked for her. Coupled with a fur coat and some glamourous makeup she looked stunning. Location wise, it didnt need much, in fact any location would have worked as your attention is drawn straight to the model.
Our next style was a simple classy bun. We switched to a studio setup for this shot, I wanted to keep the lighting quite crisp.
Next we had a very straight style, so I used a very direct light to highlight that, this is very similar to another shot ive done, but I like how the light falls on her face and catches her eyes.
Finally we had a fishtail plat, the model is actually one of the stylists, and quite young. So I went for a soft girly light and kept it nice and simple.
These are just a sample of some the shots taken on they day, I really enjoyed shooting with everyone at Thomas Austin. I have also booked another shoot with them in the coming months and I cant wait to collaborate again. I am available for Commercial Photo shoots such as this one, more details can be found on my Commercial Photography page.
